Beagle – Der Charmeur mit Spürnase

Beagle – The charmer with a keen nose

The Beagle is an energetic, charming and loyal dog, perfect for active families and adventure seekers, with its strong hunting instinct and love of cuddling.

Hello, it's Alma, the dachshund lady, again! Today I'd like to introduce you to a very special dog: the beagle. Yes, you heard right—the beagle! You could almost say the beagle is the charming cousin of us dachshunds, only with even more energy and a huge nose! 🐾

A bit of history: Where does the Beagle come from?

The Beagle has quite interesting origins. It originally comes from Great Britain – but here's a little surprise: The Beagle doesn't actually come from Great Britain! Surprise! It has its roots in Normandy, France. So the Beagle is a true European all-rounder! As a hunting dog, it roamed the forests and fields, always searching for something to hunt with its unerring nose. Today, the Beagle is less of a hunter and more a lively and loyal companion in many families.

The Beagle: A bundle of energy and workhorse

Beagles are anything but boring! This little dog is a true bundle of energy who's always on the move—you can be sure he'll never get bored. From hikes to hunting walks to exciting sniffing games, the Beagle is in his element when he can channel his tireless energy into exercise. And you know what? Sometimes I think the Beagle is even one step ahead of me at hunting and sniffing! But, shhh, that's just between us dachshunds, okay? 😉

Character and temperament: Stubborn, but lovable

A bit stubborn, or rather, "ambitious" – that's how you could describe the Beagle. It's no different with us Dachshunds! Beagles are loyal companions, but they have a mind of their own. They know exactly what they want and pursue their goals with absolute determination. This makes them excellent hunting companions, but also a dog that is not easy to train – at least not if you don't give them clear and consistent instructions.

Despite his independence, the Beagle loves being with his family. He's a real companion and enjoys cuddling on the couch. But if he sees a squirrel, he might "disappear" for a while while following his own trail.

The Beagle in the family

Oh, what can I say? The Beagle is a dog that loves family! Especially in a lively environment with lots of activities. Do you have children? Perfect! The Beagle will fit right in with your family. He is child-friendly, playful, and loves being part of a pack—whether with two-legged friends or four-legged friends. But like any dog with a strong hunting instinct, he should also have enough time to himself to relax and collect his "own" thoughts.

Appearance: The Beagle, the little charmer

When you see a Beagle, you'll immediately notice it—with its compact body, fluffy ears, and distinctive gaze. Beagles are small to medium-sized and typically weigh between 9 and 16 kilograms. They're quite athletic, even though they look more like sweet, cuddly dogs from the outside. The combination of their robust build and fluffy appearance makes the Beagle simply irresistible!

Beagles' coat colors are a real highlight: They come in tricolor (black, brown, white) or bicolor in various combinations such as tan and white, red and white, or lemon and white. Tricolor Beagles, in particular, also have attractive "broken flanks," making them even more unique.

Care and health of the Beagle

Beagles are relatively easy to care for – their short, dense fur doesn't require much attention, but their long ears do! Believe me, this is the beagle's Achilles heel. If you have a beagle, you should check and clean their ears regularly to prevent infections and mite infestations. Dirt can accumulate there, especially on long walks.

Unfortunately, due to their compact build, the Beagle is also prone to health problems, such as herniated discs or "Beagle Pain Syndrome" – an inflammatory back injury that can be quite painful for the dog. But don't worry, if you take good care of them and visit the vet regularly, you'll enjoy them for a long time!

The Beagle as a training partner

When it comes to training, you, as a Beagle owner, should keep a level head. Beagles aren't the kind of dogs that take everything to heart immediately. They need motivation—and believe me, this stubborn little dog will happily let you train them with a treat. But despite all the fun, training should be consistent and carried out with plenty of patience. Beagles are clever dogs, but sometimes they act like they haven't heard. But hey, who are we dachshunds to judge, right? 😉

The Beagle is a lovable, energetic, curious, and playful dog that makes a wonderful addition to many families. Having one as a companion in your life will ensure you're always surrounded by plenty of action and love. But be aware: A Beagle needs exercise, training, and a clear head at its side—and then you'll have a loyal friend who will never let you down!
